”Äiti, mitä tarkoittaa erityislapsi?” kysyy lapsi. Vastausta etsiessään moni aikuinen huomaa kaipaavansa lempeää ja helposti ymmärrettävää tapaa selittää asia.
Helmi kodissamme on lämminhenkinen lastenkirja, joka vastaa tähän kysymykseen tarinan kautta. Kirja seuraa Helmin, Down-tytön, tavallista eskaripäivää ja avaa lapsille ymmärrettävällä tavalla, mitä erityisyys voi tarkoittaa arjessa.
Tarina on äitini kirjoittama, ja kirjan toteuttaminen on ollut meille molemmille pitkäaikainen haave. Kuvituksella sain antaa tarinalle kasvot.

Helmi in Our Home is a warm and approachable children’s book that responds to this question through a simple, everyday story. The book follows Helmi, a girl with Down syndrome, as she goes through her regular preschool day, showing in an easy-to-understand way what special needs can look like in a child’s daily life.
The story is written by my mother, and creating this book together has been our long-held dream. Through the illustrations, I was able to give the story its visual voice.
